About Zoo-Phonics

Zoo-phonics was developed by experienced teachers Charlene Wrighton and Gigi Bradshaw in California during the mid 1980's when whole language approaches to teaching reading lacked a strong phonics component.

Zoo-Phonics is Unique and Effective
The Zoo-Phonics literacy program is a kinaesthetic, multi-sensory approach to learning all aspects of literacy, including vocabulary development and articulation, based on phonics and phonemic awareness. The principle of Zoo-Phonics maximises understanding, memory utilisation and transference to all areas of the reading, writing and spelling process in a playful and concrete manner.

Zoo-Phonics teaches using a cast of 26 animal/letter characters using this whole-brain kinaesthetic approach. Zoo-Phonics locks letters and sounds into your child's memory through body movement called signals. Research has shown that 'when the body moves, the brain remembers'.

It Is Never Too Early
Toddlers and pre-school children are in their learning prime, but parents often wait for the education system to begin the literacy process missing years of precious learning time. Research tells us that children's brains are ready and with a concrete program like Zoo-Phonics, there is no limit to what they can learn. 'Their neurons are making pathways like freeways!'

With the number of children in school classrooms, the teacher must direct the lessons at the average academic ability of the class. With a Zoo-phonics foundation to literacy, you can ensure that your child has the best chance of excelling in their early schooling years.

Educational research repeatedly supports the focus of phonics in early literacy programs as well as the educational benefits of pictorial mnemonics and kinaesthetic approaches to learning that are unique to Zoo-Phonics.

Zoo-Phonics Will Close the Gender Gap
Boys' brains are "wired" in such a way that language is a more difficult skill for them to acquire and use effectively in learning than it is for girls. Boys are more dependent on movement, pictures, diagrams and graphs. Therefore early-childhood language activities must be paired with movement and or the use of manipulatives.

Boys need to be engaged by appealing to their "competitive energy" through physical movement and manipulation of physical objects, and games. This is exactly what Zoo-phonics does best. It uses pictorial mnemonics (animal letters), body movements (signal) and teaches through physical games and activities. It makes an abstract skill (language) concrete and playful. No longer are boys left behind in early education literacy lessons!
