The Learning Bee

The Curriculum

The Zoo-phonics curriculum is structured so that it is largely age independent. A child will commence with the Zoo-Phonics alphabet. Once this has been thoroughly understood the child will then advance to the next level of phonetic learning. The curriculum has been structured so that a child may commence the Learning Bee's Zoo-Phonics program at any age or any time of year.

Morning Programs:

New Bees, Baby Bees and Honey Bees 2+ years
As soon as you see that your child is ready to sit for a few minutes and listen to a story, they are ready for The Learning Bee! We will start by manipulating lower case letters, playing with their shapes and the sounds they make. They will then learn to discern and distinguish the letter sounds from each other and to match sounds to shapes using the Animal Letter Cards and Body Movements. The letters learnt will then be reinforced with fun games, music and activities which will lay the foundation for all future reading, writing and spelling. The parents stay with their child for this fun program.
Children progress to the next level when they demonstrate they are ready for the next phase of Zoo-phonics.
You will be amazed at how quickly they will learn the Zoo-Phonics alphabet and how much fun they have doing it!

Bumble Bees
This program commences similar to the Honey Bees curriculum with content and activities adjusted to be ability appropriate. Children are introduced to the Zoo-phonics merged animals and letters. Zoo-Phonics concepts are reinforced continually and extend to the introduction of vowel consonant sounds. This exposes the children to the job of our hardest workers in the alphabet, vowels. In addition to mastering lower case letters and sounds, the children will start to learn medial sounds as well as sounding and signalling consonant vowel small words.
The program will include fun games, music and activities which will further lay the foundation for all future reading, writing and spelling. The parents stay with their child for this 40 minute program.
The focus of this program is on fun through learning.

Master Bees 1
Once the Zoo-Phonics Fundamentals have been learnt and thoroughly understood, children (and parents!) can then progress to the Master Bees program. In this program we remove the animals and focus on letters as you or I know them while continuing with Zoo-phonics sounds and signals. We also refine fine motor skills and develop correct formation of letters using WA's modern cursive script which is common throughout our schools. Capital letters and short vowel word families such as at, ab and ad are introduced. Once the children have mastered the phonetic alphabet, they are then ready to read and spell! At this stage, time is spent on common sight words from the 'Dolch' word lists. We then spend a lot of time experimenting with making words and manipulating letters into words, which the children sound out. Zoo-Phonics readers will be introduced to allow the children to practice their newly developed skills. It is advised the parent  stay with their child for this 40 minute program.

Master Bees 2
Children move quickly into this phase of Zoo-phonics.  Once they have the ability to sound out consonant vowel consonant (cvc) words we move them onto our consonant blends and diagraphs. With the introduction of four letter words, the children are able to read more complex texts and become confident readers who are ready to tackle the world of literacy with ease.
