The Learning Bee

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I pushing my child by doing this program?
The Zoo-phonics program is based on having fun. You can think of it as a play group with a purpose. Your child will not even realise they are taking the first steps towards reading and writing. What they will notice is the great time they are having with Mum or Dad.

Will the children sit at desks?
No. The program is focused on learning through fun and is therefore not a formal classroom set up.  Most of the lessons will take place with children sitting on the carpeted floor. Tables will be used for craft activities and we may also take advantage of the lawn area outside on fine days.

Will my child be bored once they start learning at school?
The purpose of this program is to ensure the children have a solid foundation in literacy prior to entering the classroom. Rather than being bored by having this foundation, your child will be able to achieve a greater understanding of all subjects when they reach formal schooling years. It will ensure they are not caught on the basics and also that they do not get left behind. Phonics is the basis of our English language and is the key tool that makes us successful at reading, spelling and writing.  It is also no longer a mandatory subject taught in WA schools, depending on the philosophy of individual teachers.

What are the Qualifications of the Program Coordinator?
Leslie is a University qualified Primary School Teacher with 15 years experience. She has taught children from Pre-Primary to Year 7 and has a strong understanding of childhood literacy development. Leslie is also a mother of three children.

Where is the Venue?
The program is held at Heathcote on Duncraig Rd in Applecross. It is just off the Kwinana Freeway at Canning Highway. The Swan Meeting room is part of the Challenger TAFE campus.

Can you enter the program mid year or mid term?
Yes. The program is structured so that children will be able to commence with the Learning Bee at any time during the term or the year. There is never a wrong time to start and it is never too late to begin the journey into our incredible English language.
